At 23 years old Stephen Ballard was engaged as Clerk by the H&G Canal Navigation Company.

Two years after submitting a report on completing the canal from Ledbury to Hereford he moved the project through to completion.

His story is inspirational, later moving on to engineering projects around the country, eventually working on the Hereford to Worcester railway line.
