We are restoring the Hereford & Gloucester Canal to be a fantastic green corridor that visitors can enjoy.
We encourage local communities and groups to engage with us at every opportunity.
To further this the Trust arranges or promotes a wide variety of events throughout the year for H&G CT Members and the wider public to enjoy.
These include;
- Evening Social Meetings, Lectures and Talks,
- Sending our Sales and Publicity Team to country and canal related shows and exhibitions,
- Open Days at our Canal Restoration Sites,
- Canal Walks
- The Trust’s own weekly canal infrastructure restoration work parties,
See more on all these below…
Social evenings are generally held on the 3rd Thursday of most months at our regular haunt, The Royal Oak Inn, Much Marcle, Herefordshire HR8 2ND.
The Royal Oak is an excellent venue and we try to host interesting speakers on a wide range of topics. Everyone is welcome.
For more information on the Royal Oak, please telephone 01531 660300.
All meetings are at 7.30 for 8.00 pm unless otherwise stated. Please support our monthly meetings and tell your friends.
Please note there will be an admission charge of £2.00.

Over Festival on the Canal
The ‘Over Festival on the Canal’ has been the H&GCT’s flagship event taking place ever year over a weekend in August.
The site including the canal basin at Over is regularly visited by more than 1000 people to savour and discover and enjoy the wide variety of attractions.
The site is shared by The Trust’s former The Wharf House, the AA-Red Rosette-awarded Restaurant with Rooms, which has now been re-named The Lock Keepers, and leased to a third party operator.
Entrance to the Festival was free for all to enjoy the usual sideshows and stalls associated with a family fun day out, with a normally watery theme commonly enhanced by visitor participation.
Attractions typically included a Model Boat regatta, various displays and the H&GCT’s very own flotilla of restored heritage boats providing tours of the canal to Vineyard Hill.
Large marquees housed a range of local produce and crafts for sale, including local beers, cider and perry, whilst a comprehensive programme of live music was usually to be expected on the river terrace with The Wharf House providing refreshments of Tapas and a hugely successful Beer Festival.
Canal Trust Open Days
In addition to the Festival on the Canal at Over, the H&GCT remains keen to discuss its plans with local communities and has organised regular Open Days at Aylestone Park in Hereford, Yarkhill, and Oxenhalll and Newent.
We also try to hold a Winter Bazaar towards the end of each year – in the past these have been in Ledbury or Newent.

Sales and Promotion Events with the H&GCT Roadshow
Raising funds for and awareness of the Trust’s work is vital in maintaining progress with the Canal’s restoration.
Our Sales and Information Stand can be seen at many Waterways and Country Shows during the year.
We have two small teams of volunteers based at Hereford and Gloucester to cover both local and national events.
Why not have a good day out with the H&G CT?
Come and visit, or better still, join us on the stand – We cannot promise that you will see the world with us but you may visit an area that is new to you – and we always do our utmost to ensure that you have some time to look around – and your admission to the event will be free!
We urgently need additional volunteers to help us at these interesting events.
Our small but well-established teams will make you very welcome! Please contact us to discuss where and when you can get involved.
