Oxenhall – Ell Brook Aqueduct – Removing the Bailey Bridge

The Bailey Bridge has been a useful and safe way to cross Ell Brook Aqueduct whilst the initial work on the aqueduct was completed. The removal was undertaken by the Royal Monmouthshire Engineers, who saw the activity as a useful training exercise. The task was to lift off the deck of the Bailey bridge, preparing the crane platform and then lifting the bridge to a new level platform in our […]

Canal banks take shape at Dymock!

November 2014 Canal banks take shape at Dymock! We are pleased that at last the Canal restoration is proceeding on site, if very much delayed. We greatly look forward to our long-term partner Keyway completing the work. PICS Thanks to GP Thomas the towpath bank takes shape with diverted electricity cable buried within the new bank.

The Wharf House Development

The Wharf House at Over Basin was built on the site of the old lock cottage that once stood overlooking the banks of the River Severn. The shell of the building was constructed for the Trust by Swan Hill Homes. Inside, Trust volunteers have completed the entire fit-out, much of it using material recycled from the Hospital buildings that once stood near by. The Wharf House fit-out created a restaurant, tea […]

Oxenhall – Restoration of the Spill Weir by Lock House

The reconstruction of the spill weir by Oxenhall Lock House proved to be quite a challenge and plans were changed as obstacles arose. Before any work could start on the sump in front of the weir it was imperative that the flow of water through the culvert under the towpath was blocked enabling the work to be carried out in the dry. After a number of attempts the volunteers eventually […]

Over Festival on the Canal 2014

The site is also the head office of the Herefordshire & Gloucestershire […]

May 2014 – Construction of the Overflow Weir at Aylestone Park nears completion.

As can be seen in the photos we now have all the concrete finished on the impressive new overflow weir (capacity 6.5 cubic metres per second) to serve the City Centre and Canal which will in due course discharge via new reed beds. These will scrub the water and lead to a net increase in the quality of water discharged from the City of Hereford to the Wye catchment. Work […]

February 2014 – Aylestone Overflow Weir Construction

The contract for the construction of the weir was awarded by the H&G CT to Gardiners Construction. The work has not gone as fast as we would have liked but completion is getting closer. The narrow bank between the excavation and the Canal was breached at one stage due to flooding of the Canal and the contractor has used locally sourced clay to construct a wider bund between the Canal […]

Oxenhall – Restoration of Ell Brook Aqueduct

Following completion of the restoration work on House Lock during the summer in 2003, the Trust’s Oxenhall team was able to turn their attention to restoration of the Ell Brook Aqueduct. Although it was known that both faces of the aqueduct were in poor condition, the fully severity of this was not established until loose stonework had been made safe and the vegetation covering the structure had been removed. The […]

November 2013 – Construction of the Overflow Weir at Aylestone Park

Construction of the Overflow Weir at Aylestone Park The H&G Canal Trust negotiated a new contract with Gardiners Construction to construct the weir on its behalf and, as Colin Dymott’s photographs show, work is progressed well although sadly hampered by the storm in late October. The Trust’s own volunteers would be on site later in November to tidy the general Canal area prior to the opening of the adjoining play […]
