At 23 years old Stephen Ballard was engaged as Clerk by the H&G Canal Navigation Company. Two years after submitting a report on completing the canal from Ledbury to Hereford he moved the project through to completion. His story is inspirational, later moving on to engineering projects around the country, eventually working on the Hereford to Worcester railway line. The walk of around 7.5 easy miles follows the route of the canal, some of which is in water, passing over the Ashperton tunnel and stopping for a pub lunch at the halfway point. The Malswick Team are currently working on re-creating two new sections of canal channel totalling approximately 1300m in length. Formation of one of the new canal channels itself is well advanced, but a great deal of work still needs to be progressed including creation of a towpath, fence and hedge boundaries, wetlands and woodland habitats. Construction work on the second section should start early in 2025. New volunteers will be […]
