Stephen Ballard – Victorian Engineer Extraordinaire

At 23 years old Stephen Ballard was engaged as Clerk by the H&G Canal Navigation Company. Two years after submitting a report on completing the canal from Ledbury to Hereford he moved the project through to completion. His story is inspirational, later moving on to engineering projects around the country, eventually working on the Hereford to Worcester railway line. A guided walk along the Hereford & Gloucester Canal

The walk of around 7.5 easy miles follows the route of the canal, some of which is in water, passing over the Ashperton tunnel and stopping for a pub lunch at the halfway point. A Minibus Tour featuring the Hereford and Gloucester Canal in Herefordshire.

Starting at Aylestone Park with a walk along to the Aylestone tunnel entrance, the tour will then drive to various stops, most with short walks, to view features of interest along the line of the canal. Malswick Team Day

The Malswick Team are currently working on re-creating two new sections of canal channel totalling approximately 1300m in length. Formation of one of the new canal channels itself is well advanced, but a great deal of work still needs to be progressed including creation of a towpath, fence and hedge boundaries, wetlands and woodland habitats. Construction work on the second section should start early in 2025. New volunteers will be […]
