Stephen Ballard – Victorian Engineer Extraordinaire

At 23 years old Stephen Ballard was engaged as Clerk by the H&G Canal Navigation Company. Two years after submitting a report on completing the canal from Ledbury to Hereford he moved the project through to completion. A guided walk along the Hereford & Gloucester Canal

The walk of around 7.5 easy miles follows the route of the canal, some of which is in water, passing over the Ashperton tunnel and stopping for a pub lunch at the halfway point. A circular walk starting from Yarkhill Village hall, going up the hill to wide views across the countryside and the line of the canal, carrying on through Westhide, along the canal towpath, including Skew bridge at Monkhide.
